Mahjong Solitaire

Mahjong Solitaire is a popular , simple alternative suitable for children and adults and a single-player game where the goal is to clear the board by matching pairs of tiles.

Here’s how to play:

  1. To start the game: Choose a layout. Common layouts on online mahjong games include Turtle, Dragon, and Cat. Arrange the tiles accordingly to form the shapes. (Or a simple pyramid-like formation will work too!)

  2. Understand the Tiles: Mahjong tiles are typically divided into suits (Bamboo, Circles, Characters) and honor tiles (Winds, Dragons, Flowers, and Seasons).

Each suit has tiles numbered 1 through 9, and each number appears four times in the set.

Playing the Game:

Find and Remove Pairs:

  • Look for two identical tiles that are “free.” A tile is considered free if it has no tile on top of it and at least one side (left or right) is open.

  • Remove the pair from the layout and set them aside. Continue Matching:

  • Repeat the process of finding and removing free pairs. With each pair removed, more tiles will become accessible.

  • Keep an eye on potential matches and plan your moves to avoid getting stuck. Clear the Board:

  • The goal is to remove all tiles from the board by matching pairs.

  • If you get stuck and can’t find any more free pairs, you may need to reshuffle the tiles and start again.

Stratego (With Mahjong Tiles)

Searching for a slightly more complex variation of the game that will allow players to customise rules and add abilities?  Consider Stratego with mahjong tiles!

Materials Needed:

  • A standard set of 144 Mahjong tiles

  • A game board (you can use the original Stratego board or create a 10x10 grid on paper or a flat surface)

  • Paper and pen for recording the ranks and special roles of tiles

Setting Up the Game:

  1. Assign Ranks and Roles:

  2. Decide which Mahjong tiles will represent the different pieces in Stratego. You need 40 pieces per player, divided into ranks and special roles. For example:

  • Flag (1 piece): Use one flower tile.

  • Bombs (6 pieces): Use six season tiles.

  • Marshal (1 piece): Use the 1 character tile.

  • General (1 piece): Use the 2 character tile.

  • Colonels (2 pieces): Use the 3 character tiles.

  • Majors (3 pieces): Use the 4 character tiles.

  • Captains (4 pieces): Use the 5 character tiles.

  • Lieutenants (4 pieces): Use the 6 character tiles.

  • Sergeants (4 pieces): Use the 7 character tiles.

  • Miners (5 pieces): Use the 8 character tiles.

  • Scouts (8 pieces): Use the 9 character tiles.

  • Spy (1 piece): Use the red dragon tile.

Write down the rank or role assigned to each tile type to avoid confusion.*

1. Set Up the Board:

Arrange the board with a 10x10 grid.

Each player secretly arranges their 40 tiles on their side of the board in the first four rows. Tiles should be placed face-down so the opponent cannot see their rank or role.

Playing the Game:

Objective:

The goal is to capture the opponent’s flag or eliminate enough of their pieces to prevent any further moves.

2. Movement:

  • Players take turns moving one tile at a time.

  • Most tiles can move one space horizontally or vertically.

  • Scouts (9 character tiles) can move any number of spaces in a straight line.

  • Bombs (season tiles) and the flag (flower tile) cannot move.

3. Attacking:

  • When a piece moves onto a square occupied by an opponent’s piece, an attack occurs.

Reveal the ranks/roles of both pieces. The higher-ranked piece wins and the lower-ranked piece is removed from the board.

Special rules:

  • The spy (red dragon tile) can defeat the marshal (1 character tile) but loses to any other piece.

  • Miners (8 character tiles) can defuse bombs (season tiles).

4. Winning the Game:

  • Capture the opponent’s flag (flower tile) to win.

  • Alternatively, you win if the opponent cannot make any legal moves.

Strategies to win the game!

Carefully plan the placement of your flag, bombs, and high-ranking pieces. Make the most out of bluffs and deception by using lower-ranking pieces and bombs to mislead your opponent about the location of your important tiles. Scout and Attack! Use scouts to reveal the positions of enemy tiles and plan strategic attacks.

Additional Variations:

You can introduce house rules or additional roles for tiles, such as medics or special attackers, to add more variety and complexity to the game.
